The company was formerly known as Elgrande International Inc. and changed its name to Intelligent Living Corp in July 2007. Working with established small footprint home builders, using modular construction techniques and implementing advanced home automation/control strategies Intelligent Living is active with new construction and renovation projects in the Vancouver regional area. Greater Vancouver’s dynamic housing market and progressive zoning regulations favoring sustainable higher density infill development have created significant ongoing project opportunities for Intelligent Living’s brand of automated LEED compliant housing. Intelligent Living is actively evaluating opportunities for multi-unit residential development on residential zoned single lots within those greater Vancouver communities where zoning bylaws have been amended to encourage eco-density development. The concept of home automation has been around for some time but was generally limited to very high end homes. The costs were prohibitive primarily due to the requirement that most systems were either proprietary and/or required extensive wiring.

The premise of a smart home is relatively simple and involves two major components:
Take all the independent systems we normally have in our homes such as security alarm system, lighting switches, audio / video equipment (TVs, home theaters, CD/DVD players, etc.), video cameras, sprinkler systems, etc. and make them communicate with each other and control them through integrated and easy to use touch panels.
Make all these capabilities available to us remotely so that we can survey our home and control our systems remotely from anywhere around the world using either a phone or through the Internet.

Energy Management
Heating and cooling is the largest cost of our energy bill, followed by lighting. Smart thermostats that sense how we live and adjust automatically can correspond to significant savings. Dimming your lights to 50%, not only saves 40% of the energy used, but it also increases the life of the light bulbs by over 10 times and keep them out of the landfills.
Our smart lighting systems can be set to turn the lights on at a preset level such as 60-70%. In most cases, this will provide sufficient lighting. The light levels can be increased or decreased either from the switch itself or from the touch screen control systems.
The smart thermostats learn heating and cooling patterns for maximum efficiency and comfort. Load control modules control energy us in high wattage loads like pool pumps, electric water heaters, and air conditioner compressors. Further control is provided through temperature and humidity sensors for attics, garages, greenhouses, basements, wine cellars, coolers, pools, and spas.

Traditional distributed audio solutions incorporate centrally located source equipment such as multi-disc CD/DVD players and tuners, paired with multi-channel amplifiers that drive speakers located in each of the multitude of zones. Each audio zone is controlled by a local interface device that allows selection of source, playlists, and volume. Depending on the type of interface, all other zones can also be controlled from some of the higher end interfaces such as touch screens.
Microsoft Media Center based distributed audio/video, on the other hand, uses the local wired or wireless network to provide access to all of the content such as MP3 for music and MPEG2 for video using the local TVs as the interface device.
