What is Adsorbed Natural Gas Technology?

Absorbed Natural Gas (ANG) Technology enables the efficient storage Natural Gas.

Adsorption is the adhesion of molecules of liquids, gases, and dissolved substances to the surface of a solid. The ability of a solid to adsorb depends on the chemical makeup of the solid and its physical structure. Activated charcoal, for example, has a very large surface area because of its porous nature. This gives it the ability to adsorb large quantities of natural gas.

In a conventional high-pressure storage tank, such as a propane tank used for a backyard barbecue, gas is forced into the tank under pressure. The greater the pressure, the greater the volume of gas stored in the tank. The maximum pressure, and therefore volume of gas held in the tank, is limited by the physical properties of the tank and its valve.

The addition of a microporous material into the tank, such as activated carbon, makes it possible to do one of two things:
Store a larger volume of natural gas in the same container, at the same pressure.
Store the same volume of natural gas in the container at a lower pressure.
Until now the commercialization of Adsorbed Natural Gas technology was hindered by several unsolved technological problems. The main challenges of ANG storage products development are:

Sufficient volumetric storage ability that will be competitive with existing NG storage methods.
Efficient gas filling and release from ANG tank for automotive application, requiring control of thermo-dynamic processes.
ANG fueling system cost that should be competitive with the cost of existing fueling systems.

Energtek carried out a pioneering Research and Development venture resulting in a solution to some of the key problems of the future gas and transportation industries. The result of this research and development effort led to the first commercially efficient system of ANG storage.

Under normal conditions (atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature) NG has an extremely low energy density. Therefore its storage in simple containers is useless. Thus it can either be stored under extremely high pressure and/or at a very low temperature.

Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG)

Energtek's proprietary Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG) storage technology has quite a few promising advantages over existing methods. ANG technology allows large amounts of natural gas to be stored at a relatively low pressure, at room temperature. The principles of Natural gas adsorption have been around for decades, however no one had succeeded to develop commercially viable technology until now.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

Compressed natural gas is stored at a high pressure, usually 200-250 bars. CNG demands very robust specially-designed cylindrical tanks, which use a lot of space and are heavy. In addition, gas compression requires expensive multi-stage high-pressure compression technology.

Compressed Natural Gas is currently the prevailing technology in the Natural Gas Vehicle industry. A massive implementation of CNG vehicles in most markets is restrained by the need to invest in very expensive refueling infrastructure, and the inconvenience and additional costs of on-board CNG tanks.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

LNG is another known gas storage method. Natural gas is liquefied under pressure of 10-20 bars at minus 161.5 deg. C. LNG requires the use of complex and expensive liquefaction equipment, thermos-like tanks and significant energy consumption (25-35% of the original energy gas content) for the liquefaction and degasification. LNG storage tanks should have cylindrical or spherical shape. Due to a very distinctive advantage of scale it is applied mainly in the marine transportation of very big quantities of gas.

This technology is not yet mature enough for massive use in vehicles. Several thousands LNG fueled heavy vehicles are operated around the world whereas LNG application for light vehicles is considered to be inefficient. On-board tank for a small vehicle costs almost as much as for a heavy vehicle and has much lower net volumetric storage efficiency. LNG vehicle refueling infrastructure costs even more than CNG.

Adsorbed Natural Gas Technology Applications

Low Pressure ANG Tanks (30-70 bars)

ANG cylinders for cars
These cylinders supply energy for similar range as CNG cylinders but have one big advantage: They do not need high-pressure filling stations. This cuts the cost of construction and operation of station networks.
ANG free shape containers

The lower pressure needed when using adsorption technology allows for using of different shapes of containers (and not only cylinders). By using different shapes it is possible to make more efficient use of the vehicle's space, thus extending driving range. Such containers are especially suitable for motorcycles and small cars.
Transportation and stationary storage systems
ANG technology can be used for large reservoirs (fixed or mobile) saving both capital and operation costs.

High Pressure ANG Tanks (100-200 bars)

High-pressure ANG technology combines the effects of adsorption with high-pressure and proposes extended storage capacity for a given volume of vehicle tank. This makes transition to gas attractive for some vehicle user groups, first of all those with high driving ranges or strict on-board space limitations.
CNG Lite™ -- Low-pressure Natural Gas Fuel Supply for 2- and 3-Wheel Vehicles

Energtek has developed the CNG LiteTM system to provide fuel to 2- and 3-wheel vehicles using proprietary low-pressure technology, and the principles of Natural Gas adsorption. By converting small vehicles to operate on Natural Gas, Energtek reduces the harmful environmental damage caused by these highly polluting vehicles. In addition, Energtek can dramatically reduce driver's annual fuel costs.

Currently there are over 300 million motorized 2- and 3-wheelers on the road. These are the primary method of transportation for drivers in many Asian countries. In addition, the 2- and 3-wheel market is the world's fastest growing automotive segment. Today there is a lack of commercially viable fuel alternatives for these small vehicles.

CNG Lite presents an environmentally-friendly and affordable motor fuel alternative. The entire cost of conversion together with the fueling system is relatively inexpensive, and quickly begins to pay for itself.

Despite plenty of interest from drivers, gas companies and several governments in Southeast Asia, large scale conversion of 2- and 3-wheelers has not yet occurred due to difficulties presented by standard high-pressure CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) conversion technology.

CNG, which utilizes a working pressure of 200 bar remains unable to provide the same cost benefits as low-pressure CNG Lite. 200 bar CNG systems require expensive and sophisticated compression infrastructure to be locally deployed, while 60 bar CNG Lite allows for simpler and significantly less expensive regional compression infrastructure.

In addition, Energtek has fine tuned conversion kit technology to ensure that vehicles running on CNG Lite receive optimum fuel efficiency and performance.
